Licensed toy sales outperform broad category


Sales of licensed toys rose 3% last year to $5.3B, according to data from NPD Group.

Licensed toys now account for 29% of total brick-and-mortar toy sales and 23% of online toy sales as more children are drawn to franchise character toys than ever.

An early look at 2014 trends shows Disney (DIS -0.3%) in a dominant position. Toys tied to the movie Frozen, Disney's princesses, Mickey Mouse and friends, and the Star Wars franchise all rank in the top five for licensed toy sales.
