Target to adopt smart cards

Target (TGT -0.4%) says that beginning in 2015 it will adopt chip-and-PIN technology for its entire REDcard program.

The company is converting existing payment terminals at its stores this year ahead of schedule.

What to watch: The move by Target could pressure other retailers to move quicker toward smart cards. Companies behind the IT curve a bit could see higher costs due to the conversion.

This would be a plus for Zebra Technologies with respect to its smart card business.

It's about time this chip-and-pin train got rolling. I'm not sure how much comfort it will provide to TGT's customers, but it's a step in the right direction.

Wow, from across the pond I find it amazing that a major retailer is not using chip and pin. And I thought we always trailed the good ole USA! :-)

The US is behind you and many other countries in multiple ways when it comes to technology.
