Analysis: MasterCard has edge over Visa as EMV transition picks up

  • MasterCard (MA +1.2%) could have a competitive advantage over rival Visa (V) as retailers look toward how to handle the adoption of EMV technology.
  • The company's emphasis on using PINs over signatures could make it more attractive, according to Guggenheim Securities.
  • Cases in point: Target awarded its REDCard portfolio to MasterCard over Visa and Wal-Mart picked it to handle its store-branded cards.

The US still has not adopted the metric system!

I truly do not know what we are waiting for. We, as a country like to rest on our laurels and complain when something goes wrong (like preventable data breaches) rather than be proactive and prevent the incident.

It all comes down to economics. As long as the cost of covering fraud was less than the cost of installing chip-enabled point-of-sale terminals and issuing chip cards, merchants and banks just wrote in the cost of fraud as a budget item.

However, gangs of Eastern Europeans with exceptional computer programming skills have changed the EMV/fraud equation quickly and dramatically.

As for adoption of the metric system — that'll be a long wait.
