Chevron begins drilling for shale gas in Romania

Chevron (CVX -0.1%) says it has begun drilling for shale gas at its exploration well site in northeast Romania after months of protest-related delays.

CVX says the drilling, which will probe to a depth of ~13K ft., began today after safety and performance checks had been completed; rock samples will be taken to determine if natural gas is present.

CVX had started site operations last fall with plans to spud the probe before the end of 2013, but was forced to halt activities twice after protesters blocked access to the drill site.

Romania now has a compelling national interest in encouraging shale gas development; given its vulnerability to Russia.
These protesters will now have much less support and even face hostility.
