Who wants Sears Canada?

  • Shares of Sears Holdings (SHLD +0.4%) have retreated quite a bit from an early rush after the company disclosed it's looking at options to sell Sears Canada.
  • Though there are a few retail chains such as Primark or Uniqlo which might consider the acquisition for a quick entry into Canada, plenty of retail analysts think the stumbles by Sears and Target (TGT -0.2%) in the region will scare off many retail chains from the gambit. Macy's (M -0.1%) and Kohl's (KSS -2%) come to mind.
  • A P-E buyout is being viewed as a likely scenario, while there is a chance Hudson's Bay could play a little defense on its home turf.

JC Penny and Radio Shack should go in together and buy this gem, think of the cost savings, if they could write off store closures in Canada as well.

    Sears...what an American business tragedy!

If you are older than 40 and are an American then you remember when Sears WAS American retail.

@DVL, yeah, grew up in toughskin jeans, pushing a craftsman mower, drinking out of Kenmore fridge. Our house even a chain link fence installed by sears, and of course a family portrait done at the Sears studio. As the saying used to go if Sears didn't have it, you don't need it.

1% of all retail sales used to go to Sears. In reality, if the company focused on quality and price they still have a much stronger name than JC Penny. You can still buy good tools, work pants, etc. and it still has an association with quality and affordability. Employee quality must improve starting at management. The whole board and all the execs should go and bow their heads in shame for destroying Sears.

Lampert has used Sears as a personal annuity since taking charge. He is doing quite well.

I hear tell thru the grapevine that the auto centers are headed for the auction block later this year. This should become very interesting very quick as the auto centers have been consistent money makers and have propped up the main store balance sheets thru some lean times in the past. Pull another profit center out of the equation and you have to start to wonder just what is keeping the whole thing afloat. Damn glad I got out when I did.
