WSJ: Democrat on FCC worried about Sprint, T-Mobile as independents

Sprint's (S) pursuit of T-Mobile (TMUS) could receive unexpected support from Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democratic commissioner at the Federal Communications Commission.

Rosenworcel has privately said that the carriers might not be able to remain viable if they stay independent, the WSJ reports.

However, while the two GOP commissioners are seen as more likely to back a deal, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler and the Justice Department are not so keen due to concerns about the impact on competition.

Well Tom Wheeler and the justice dept. are out to lunch on this unless they are trying to make a case for T/VZ being impacted unfairly...c'mon!! A sprint/t-mobile merge would imo level the playing field between these great companies and all would thrive on the competition...thats what they do. Hell lets get it on. long t,vz,s

it's kind of obvious that King Wheeler is protecting his prior patrons (Comcast in cable, and T/VZ in wireless). Forcing 4 carriers in place is nothing but a duopoly protection policy. dont think of this as Sprint buying TMUSA; think it the other way where the rebel Legere at TMUSA is taking over Sprint. Masa Son's history is an attacker -- he knows nothing else. That's why he is frustrated with the management at Sprint and has turned over half of senior management already. Why the FCC or DOJ think that the tiger will change its stripes seems baffling. By blocking TMUSA-Sprint combination, all they are doing is coddling and protecting T and VZ.
