New Happy Meal refresh at McDonald's goes astray

  • McDonald's (MCD -0.4%) is seeing some social media backlash after introducing a new character named Happy yesterday.
  • The response has ranged from confusion to derision.
  • Happy was unveiled as part of the company's refresh of its Happy Meal menu which includes a low-fat yogurt option.
  • What to watch: Taco Bell has been hammering McDonald's in marketing campaigns aimed at the young breakfast crowd. Based on the early response, Happy isn't going to make Mickey D's any edgier, although channel checks also indicate Taco Bell's breakfast traffic has only been moderate.

I wouldn't count them out yet! For decades now it has been difficult to drive by a McDonalds with kids in the back seat. The demographic here is kids ...... not stock pickers. McDonalds has not been terribly successful at increasing the birth rate, but they have done a reasonable job at attracting the children we have had.

All they need to do is sign Pharrell Williams and use his song "Happy" and it will be golden.

I am not sure McDonald's wants to approach healthier eating for children by scaring kids out of buying happy meals.

And what would one expect when a company tries to pander to those who hate them (and make a comfy income doing so, thank you very much!), instead of listening to the ... customers.

That said, the last round of (MCD) bitchin' was in the low - mid 90's. Stock is low 100's now.
long and looking to add more (MCD)
