Lucasfilm starts prepping for first 'Star Wars' standalone film

Lucasfilm (DIS) announces that the first Star Wars standalone movie will be directed by Godzilla director Gareth Edwards.

The film - scheduled for release on Dec. 16, 2016 - is part of a plan by the studio to release one standalone Star Wars character film every year after Star Wars: Episode VII debuts.

Though there's no official betting line on which character will be the focus of the film, the leading candidates according to Hollywood buzz are Yoda, Boba Fett, and Han Solo.
