Lithuania nears LNG deal with Statoil, which would end Gazprom's monopoly

Lithuania is close to signing its first liquefied natural gas purchase with Statoil (STO +2%), which would end Gazprom's (OGZPY) monopoly as its supplier.

The deal, if finalized, would help the former Soviet state reduce its total dependence on pipeline gas imports from Russia, which Lithuania sees as a top risk to its national security.

Meanwhile, Greenpeace activists have boarded a Statoil drilling rig in the Norwegian Arctic, disrupting the company's plans to start drilling in its northernmost wells on the Norwegian continental shelf.

I am Lithuanian and everybody in our country understands the importance of this project (liquid gas terminal on the sea port in Klaipeda with coopertion of Statoil) Please note that currently Gazprom is selling natural gas to Lithuania at the highest price in Europe (this is one of the methods to push Baltic states down - the russian pipline is currently the only way to get gas for four countries Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland). Similar project is being developed by Finland and Estonia. For that soon there be held an arbitage court in Stockholm where the 1, 3 billion Eur to be paid by Gazprom to Lithuania is anticipated....not easy time is coming for Putins baby Gazprom...
