Tornado damages Marathon Petroleum's Garyville refinery

Marathon Petroleum's (MPC) 522K bbl/day oil refinery in Garyville, La. - one of the largest in the U.S. - sustained damage from a tornado this morning, the extent of which is still being assessed.

A power outage triggered a shutdown of one of the refinery's crude distillation units, but a second unit continues to operate.

If key units at the plant remain shut, MPC would consume less Light Louisiana Sweet crude, which could weaken the price of the grade.
