Disney hopes for magical spell from Maleficent

Disney's (DIS) Maleficent opens this weekend in the U.S. and most global markets on expectations the CGI-infused film's $175M production budget will be easily overcome.

The movie's visual effects are drawing positive reviews from movie critics, but it's 4-year to 8-year old girls that might have the final say.

Though Disney plans to continue to print money off of the consumer product tie-ins and entertainment value (ice shows, animation shorts, books) of the Frozen princesses, it's up in the air if Maleficent can deliver the same lasting franchise impact.

Box Office Mojo forecasts a strong $60M domestic opening for Maleficent.
