Disney hopes for magical spell from Maleficent

  • Disney's (DIS) Maleficent opens this weekend in the U.S. and most global markets on expectations the CGI-infused film's $175M production budget will be easily overcome.
  • The movie's visual effects are drawing positive reviews from movie critics, but it's 4-year to 8-year old girls that might have the final say.
  • Though Disney plans to continue to print money off of the consumer product tie-ins and entertainment value (ice shows, animation shorts, books) of the Frozen princesses, it's up in the air if Maleficent can deliver the same lasting franchise impact.
  • Box Office Mojo forecasts a strong $60M domestic opening for Maleficent.
