iBeacon to be unveiled at San Francisco Developers Conference

Apple (AAPL) will reveal more iBeacon technology at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco starting today.

Virgin Atlantic has already installed beacons in London's Heathrow Airport so a smartphone automatically displays a boarding pass when the passenger comes to the gate or security. LabWerk has also produced an app to alert drivers of empty spots in parking garages based on the beacons.

Mobile devices receive the low-power Bluetooth signal within 500ft of a beacon. The transmitter price is now between $5 and $20, but is expected to fall to less than $2 next year.

Apple has also addressed iBeacon privacy concerns, saying the beacons don't track users, since they only send out a signal, and don't receive information.

Hmm, what's to unveil? iBeacons was already unveiled at WWDC 2013 (only for developers, low-key announcement, applications and implementations trickle in slowly this and next year).

Unless Apple adds a more complete payment system I don't see this moving the stock price or add value in the *short-term* (another key factor will be whether Apple will include NFC in the iPhone6 or use iBeacon stand-alone.

PS: There are also some privacy / user acceptance issues to be adressed, the linked WSJ article covers these very well.

I love when longs who sell to buy lower suddenly turn extremely bearish in a minute...

No iBeacon yet, but when they announced that the OS Yosemite allows to receive iPhone calls and regular SMS on your Mac, it was simply amazing, the whole audience went wild.

Thanks for the interesting posting. I suspect that the impact of iBeacons will be more diverse and valuable than people currently estimate.

Zero hardware expected- and they delivered. A surprise would have been nice.
Still- great new features and the HEALTH should be a biggie with hospitals and Drs involved.
