Statoil finally begins drilling Barents Sea well after protestors removed

Statoil (STO -0.2%) has finally begins drilling a controversial wildcat at the Apollo prospect in the Barents Sea after Greenpeace protestors were removed from the area.

A probe has been spudded by semi-submersible Transocean Spitsbergen in STO-operated production license 615 in the frontier Hoop area of the Arctic play, making it the northernmost well drilled to date off Norway.

STO operates the license with a 35% stake, with partners including ConocoPhillips (COP), which owns 25%.
