Alibaba reportedly eying "lucky" 8/8 IPO

Alibaba (ABABA) wants to start trading on Aug. 8, sources tell Bloomberg. The reason: The number 8 denotes good fortune in Chinese lore, and co-founders Jack Ma and Joe Tsai view it as auspicious.

8/8 also happens to be the date on which the 2008 Beijing Olympics commenced. CNBC previously reported Alibaba's IPO could arrive in the first week of August.

Bloomberg cautions "a weak market or a myriad of other factors" could delay the year's biggest IPO until September. Management reportedly prefers to trade under the symbol BABA; no symbol has been officially proposed yet.

I don't think this company will fair well against Asia or North America. So basically their growth is going to be dependent on France and Brazil?

I don't see this one as attractive as JD or Alibaba or even Amazon. Amazon still grew international sales over 20% in 2013 in Germany, and near 40% for the majority of other countries.

Only the U.K. at 13% growth and Japan negative 2% decline were weak internationally. Last quarter international sales picked up as did North America. Long-term I think owning Amazon and one or two Chinese e-commerce companies makes sense.

Also, an even number of 8s is even more auspicious.
