Amazon holding June 18 launch event; smartphone on tap?

  • Amazon (AMZN) has announced it's holding a June 18 launch event.
  • There have been multiple reports (I, II, III) stating Amazon is prepping one or more smartphones. The WSJ reported in April Amazon plans to show off a smartphone featuring a 3D display (enabled by 4 front-facing cameras) in June, and start selling it by the end of September.
  • Also: A May 29 BuzzFeed report stated Amazon is set to launch a streaming music service for Prime subs (will offer access to songs at least 6 months old) in June or July.
  • Update: A teaser video suggests a mobile/handheld device is in the cards.

It's a pie with billions of pieces. If nothing else it is a product ordering machine. Go for it Amazon!

It's the smartphone, whose main claim to fame is the 3D gimmick (I wonder if AMZN bought the rights to the patents on this, as there are sure to be some out there, this tech has been demo'ed frequently even by AAPL).

So AMZN will be launching another smartphone into an oversupplied industry where nearly only Samsung and AAPL are making any money...

There's a time when Samsung launched when only Apple was making any money :)

Not quite, Samsung just expanded, it had been making phones for a while.

It's very unlikely that AMZN will make any money selling smartphones. It's altogether likely that it will lose money doing so.

They need to get their foot in the door. What was Samsung before the Galaxy came out? I owned a Samsung phone prior to that and I don't remember it's name.

If they make a solid first effort and then capture some market, they can build on that.

Bio Bull, it makes about the same sense to be positive about AMZN doing this, as it makes sense to be positive about BBRY or Windows Phone alone.

Don't buy first generation smartphone from Amazon unless it is given away for free for prime subscribers.

    Ignore Amazon...at your own peril!

Amazon is no player to ignore. It is extremely difficult to compete against a giant who doesn't care if it loses money......all players should be concerned.

Well BBRY doesn't care either. It, too, loses money. And it too has a tiny part of the smartphone market.

What could ever go wrong with AMZN having a tiny part of the smartphone market and losing money?
