Nokia (NOK -1.4%) has bought Mesaplexx, an Australian developer of RF filter tech (known as xCube) it claims can improve a base station's performance while shrinking hardware size and weight.

Nokia plans to integrate Mesaplexx's technology within its Flexi line of compact base stations, and thinks doing so could allow it to reduce form factors for its small cell base stations by 30% or more.

Nokia, like Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, and Cisco, has viewed the budding small cell market as a growth opportunity. Carriers have begun rolling out the miniaturized base stations in high-traffic areas such as train stations, stadiums, and theme parks.
