Anadarko hits 52-week highs as takeover speculation swirls

  • Anadarko Petroleum (APC +3.1%) moves to 52-week highs before pulling back a bit amid speculation it may be the subject of takeover interest from Exxon Mobil (XOM +0.6%).
  • APC has “an asset base that would be coveted by any large player looking to make that kind of a splash," says a Raymond James analyst. "The question would be, is now the time for that?"
  • APC says it doesn't comment on rumors.

Why not buy a handful of smaller players for cheaper?

I'm with you, waiting for someone to start to roll up either the Bakken, Utica, or the Niobrara. Even the Eagle Ford likely needs to consolidate.

XOM is constantly buying small independents. It needs big acquisitions to move the needle. People constantly compare it to CVX but XOM is twice the size. XOM has been hammering cost savings and cutbacks in expenditures I wouldn't be surprised if they do acquire someone.

You would hope SEC wouldn't allow such a move but the likely will.

Queried about APC on Cramer's "Lightning Round" he said it's his favorite energy stock in the Charitable Trust and don't be surprised if it'll no longer be an independent by EOY.

Today's price action and big call option trading are boosting the stock. Looks like happy times ahead. Long time holder, but never took plunge on calls.

Apache looks more attractive given their Permian Basin acreage.

XOM is building its new HQ not too far from APC's Woodlands location. Go figure!

With XOM's balance sheet, this seems like a no-brainer

Size & quality of reserves. Exxon sells the little stuff and buys the big stuff.

Majors can either grow their production/reserves by way of the drillbit or M+A. With majority of majors going the austerity route of slashing capex....M+A fever would seem on the horizon. If XOM does buy APC...pressure would be on CVX, COP, RDS/A, TOT, BP, STO....monkey see..monkey do...

The Joe Allman, the energy analyst @ JPM this morning dismissed APC as a takeout play due to the likely require price @ a premium north of their $140 NAV. He was the same guy who gave MMR @ $0 price target....a week before FCX bought them for $15 a share....w/JPM bankers advising FCX on the purchase...LOL
