So I thought everyone was saying that Solar City's advantage was that it did not build its own Solar cells so it did not have to spend a lot on R&D. So this is taken a good news?

The main advantages in the short term are the economies of scale from mass manufacturing of the panels, not of the actual R and D. That is one of the reasons they are also going to be building massive plants.

Regardless of what was said or implied earlier, SC will make their own highest output panels and will cut out middleman profits in the process. They will do it in favorable manufacturing environments in the US and distribute the product via a solid and cost-effective transportation network.

I cannot wait to see what Musk pulls out of his sleeve next.
