Retail giants proposed as potential Lululemon suitors

  • Nike (NKE +0.7%) could be interested in making a bid for Lululemon (LULU +3.3%), according to retail analyst Jennifer Black. V.F. Corp and Adidas were lined up as possible suitors earlier.
  • Lululemon's portfolio of products would make a nice add-on to Nike's inventory and allow it to leverage its marketing machine.
  • CNN's Paul La Monica is going a different direction. He says a chase by Under Armour (UA -1%) for LULU makes sense.
  • Any potential bidder for the yoga apparel seller is likely to have to worry that Uniqlo (FRCOY) could come in with a late over-the-top offer.

People have to think. Why do all the media suddenly concentrate on the speculation today? The rumors have been out there for a while. My guess is some traders are looking for cash in the rebound bet on around $40. Today is the perfect day to bring some hype.

Interesting how the article in the first link keeps using the terms, "maybe, could, and possibly".

I do not invest based upon those words.

a bid makes sense, particularly from VFC. The LULU name is still strong with many and it fits with their portfolio. I can't see UA being interested, they are too busy building their own brand, why would they want to sell things under a different logo? And there is definitely no point in buying LULU and then not using its brand.

Fast Retailing would be the best fit for Lululemon and makes perfect sense for them to acquire Lululemon. Remember the bid for J.Crew that fell apart? 5B was the whisper number for J.Crew and Lululemon's current market cap is not far from it. With Fast Retailing's big influence in Japan and the rest of the Asia, they can help Lululemon to ramp up production, while cutting cost, and expand exponentially in Asia. I say the Japanese market itself for Lululemon is a $1B market. Japanese people love high end clothing, and yoga/athletic wear trend is just getting started in Japan.

c_hc, you do realize that Lululemon is extremely unpopular in Asia thanks to Chip Wilson's insulting comments about them, right?

Yes, but the better question to ask is how many people know/care about it? Asian people would find the way non-Asian people pronouncing Chinese, Korean, Japanese humorous. Is it insulting? Depends how you take it.

Go to Google Japan and do a search on ルルレモン and check out how many sites are selling Lululemon products and the price they are selling for. The prices are literally doubling the retail prices in North America.

How can you people be surprised takeover speculation would happen when the shares get cut in half? Is this serious or just stubborn shorts late to the party?
