Sierra Mist to get stevia twist

PepsiCo (PEP +0.1%) will reformulate Sierra Mist and add stevia as a sweetener, according to Beverage Digest.

The new lower-calorie Sierra Mist product is slated to hit stores in the fall.

What to watch: The use of stevia is expected to one of the bigger health debates in the beverage industry over the next year.

If they use Reb M (X) you probably would not even know the difference between the way it tastes now or after the reformulation. Vitamin Water... didn;t seem to test market... while Coke did for Coke Life. Coke would not be doing this if they didn't see a potential market.

Plus these high intensity sweeteners will not only be used in the carbonated beverage industry. There is a whole slew of applications.

What's the debate? Stevia tastes sweet, but is not bad for you. I don't see why there would be any debate.

I don't think they meant debate in a bad way per se... but rather a board for discussion. Just meaning keep an eye on the stevia market. It will be hotter this fall and into 2015 that is was a few years back. That is mainly due to the fact that formulation and preparation has been enhanced. Exciting times ahead for those in early.

Well the debate is, at least for me, that Stevia is supposed to cause some kind of cancer. I must admit this information is a couple years old and I never actually researched it thouroughly (not necessary in Europe since there's no bloody FDA there working for the corps instead for the people) but considering the tons of toxics we're already putting into our bodies every day (hello GMO corn turned HFCS) I don't need another contributor to increase risks for anything.

I use stevia for coffee and iced tea

it is definitely an acquired taste..........that's the issue ..................on health since it is a natural product there is no health concern
