More on Glu Mobile: Kardashian game provides a boost

  • Helping Glu Mobile (GLUU +8.6%) rally today: The very strong reception for Kim Kardashian: Hollywood, a free-to-play game launched on the App Store and Google Play earlier this week.
  • The game is already #2 on App Annie's free U.S. iPhone download chart, and #8 on its ranking of top-grossing apps. The App Store shows a current user rating of 5/5, and Google Play a rating of 4.7/5.
  • The game stands to lower Glu's dependence on Deer Hunter 2014, which is now respectively ranked #66 and #49 on App Annie's U.S. iPhone download and top-grossing charts.

SA saw my comment earlier on why GLU popped today and corrected. Yes..crowd- sourcing is a two way street.

SA should look into copyright infringement with website called "Market News Call" or have they licensed their rights to them.
Specifically SA published initial take on GLU at 10:45 AM attributing pop to Android TV. Market News Call publishes verbatim take at 10:56 AM.
SA publishes "more" on Glu at 2:12 PM attributing pop to Kardashian game based on my numbers in SA comment. Market News Call publishes new take copying SA verbatim at 2:40 PM EDT.

Also, TheStreet.com publishes original take on Glu at 11.12 AM. Look for "more" from them later in the day.

I know...we live in a post-modern, copy of a copy of a copy world. Fair use...blah, blah, blah,

    Hi Larry,

You still have the same opinion on glu as you did in the comments section of your kabam article? Not sure if you read my comment in response to yours, but I'm gonna give myself some props for the Kim K call!

    Hi J,
Too early to tell. But Kudos to Glu and Kim. Best launch since DH14 in Sept 2013. You need 2 months of tracking on App Annie to tell if Kim K (the game) has "legs". DH14 was a Top 10 revenue ranking game for 2 months after launch, then a Top 20 for the next two months, then started to fade in late January 2014. RoboCop fell fast. FLC2 same.

Still, I think this is a breakout for Glu getting into casual RPG and away from dependancy on mid/hard core games.

Thanks for your response. I agree, but do think the odds are significantly in Glu's favor to keep this game in the top 10 for some time, primarily for two reasons:

    1) As you probably know, barriers to entry in top 10 grossing have strengthened significantly over the last 12 months. Only a handful of apps have penetrated the top 10 grossing, and when the do, they generally hang in there for many months (some well over a year). This of course depends on the ability of the developer to do the following two things well:

    2) a) Regularly update the app with fresh content and features
    b) Bring in new users through data driven (ROI positive) marketing efforts.

Glu has a proven track record of both a and b with dh14. They brought in a new UA team about a year ago and a new head of studio (who was the head of mobile for Kabam) about two ago. Also, the team that made Kim K game was the team that creates smurfs village (one of the first free to play hits) and they know how to make money. Anyway I'm pretty bullish for many reasons if you'd like to discuss offline, feel free to dm me...thanks.
