BlackBerry rallies as Passport images/specs leak

  • Leaked pictures of BlackBerry's (BBRY +4.8%) anticipated Passport phone show a rectangular device with an abbreviated QWERTY keyboard.
  • The enterprise-focused device reportedly features a 4.5", 1440x1440, display (1:1 aspect ratio), 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, and a hefty 3450mAh battery.
  • John Chen recently announced the Passport would launch in September. The leaks come two weeks after BlackBerry announced (in a strategy shift) Amazon's Appstore for Android would be integrated with BlackBerry 10.3 (due this fall), and that it'll work with BlackBerry developers to migrate their apps to the Appstore.

Nervous retail shorts covering on any news. Blackberry is still just a dead man walking. One day soon, Blackberry will run out of the last few low information people in Indonesia who still think Blackberry phones are 'cool'.

you're missing a nice turnaround, enterprise customers are slowly upgrading their devices despite the loss of some who have moved onto other platforms. BlackBerry will seei good HW sales in the coming quarters, BES 12 and the associated services revenue. As Chen said in the last earnings announcement the focus is now to increase revenue they've stabilized the patient.

I wonder why SA thinks "leaked" pictures of the Passport are causing the stock to move higher? These photos have been around for days. More likely is funds accumulating, realizing this is not going to be below $15 for very much longer.

I saw that photo on Friday I believe. Anyway, it is an awesome device, the keyboard size alone will bring in a lot of new buyers who had problems with the smaller keys (like me).

    Corey,

For what it is worth, I agree. The market watchers always have a "reason" why the "whatever" moved. I think they are created by the script writers.

Someone mentioned retail shorts getting out. Once again, just my take. Retail investors cannot move the market in a stock that today traded 23 million shares. We are but a grain of sand on the beach, hence the saying "the trend is your friend", cause you sure can't turn it, Institutions and very big players do, and they are worried about each other, not us.

For every retail dollar there is 1000 bet the opposite side by institution traders. You don't believe me? The goal of this rigged game is to bankrupt the retail investor. The sooner you understand that the sooner you stand a chance to survive in the market.

It never ceases to amaze me how everyone needs to point to an "event" or a specific trade on the tape that causes a stock to move one way or another. The investing public is simply waking up to the fact that no, BBRY is not out of business, has new phones in the pipeline, and has a wonderful turnaround plan in place. Big funds are accumulating. It's that simple. History will go down showing Rueters doing BBRY a huge favor my misleading the investing public into thinking BBRY is no longer in business, keeping the shares artificially low down near book value. Not only are they still in business, but about to release cutting edge products. No only are they still in business but EZ Pass program is leading to major gains in the enterprise segment.

How would the public know BBRY has new phones in the pipeline, a wonderful turnaround plan, or that big funds are accumulating without events such as earnings calls, press releases, product leaks, etc.?

I don't understand your gripe about information, since that's what investors make decisions upon. Typically when new information becomes available that triggers a buy, sell, hold, or short - is that not how you operate?

Stocks don't typically move up/down 5+ points in a day without some 'event' triggering a mass decision by investors - what am I missing here?

BBRY was heavily shorted to the last results announcement. More likely this surge is due to shorts covering.

Call me crazy, but I fail to see how this new massive device will help BBRY. The specs are just normal, and the thing looks ugly. The smaller keyboard won't be a fit with the die-hards. I think this is another miss. We will see in a few months...

You are dead wrong on this device. This thing is unique and has very good specs. Expect many people who left Blackberry to come back for this one. Also, with sufficiently big screen, I won't be surprised if many people buy this device to be their first qwerty keyboard device. I might be one of them. The device is unique, nothing like it exists in the market.
iTards said the same thing about Samsung Note and now look every company is trying to create its own phablet.

The Passport "WILL" have the best looking screen ever seen on a mobile device. The screen in the beta Passport is simply brilliant.

I can see this device being the next big thing, and something Business people especially will want to own.

The Passport is "Unique"Innovative"Bold. John Chen has Balls of Iron for such a "Visionary" device.

Can Apple? Samsung? Google? Match and/or compete with such a device? NOPE.

Why can you see it as the next big thing? I'm curious.
Commendable to see BBRY trying to break new ground with a bloody huge phone but I always considered the size to be important in a decision to purchase.

Granted there are probably a few applications for an uber phone but this is touching the size of the iPad Mini.

Can't buy any BBRY but can't short it either, still on the sidelines, congratulations to those who had faith over the quarter.

It is a mini tablet, basically, with a very large battery, killer processor and masses of RAM. I presume it has an HDMI port and the usual antennas (4 band or better).

Why is it going up? Because institutions see a good opportunity for a short squeeze. The technical are right, the products are good, launches are happening, they are leading in Enterprise and devices once again. What's not to like?

I will report from Indonesia in a few days. All the numbers and 'successes' here are speculation - I will see what is on the ground and in the hand.

In case you apple suckers didn't know, your precious Apple CEO used a blackberry and he switched to Android. Shows how much he loves apple right? All the successful people use blackberry like Jay Z, Drake, Tim Cook just to name a few. Plus, 60% of their revenue is through security. So investors aren't completely focused ln their phones. Do your research.

Okay all you people saying the Passport is ugly and has normal specs. stop saying that. It is not true. Check out the specs before you make ridiculous comments. The Passport is a very innovative device. It's not for everyone, and it's not for consumers, but you can still buy one. It's geared toward the healthcare and similar services. It's geared toward executives and high level management. It it's going to be a success. The Health care industry will eat this phone up (remember nano tech healthcare) Yes that's right did you forget about that! It will be a breath of fresh air after having to put up with that BS Iphone in landsacpe mode all the time. As far as those that don't like it. don't buy it, but stop saying nonsense, it's a well specd, phone thank you!

It should be noted that there was a similar run-up following the fabled BB10 introduction. The rising share price signified little other than more people were willing to buy into the idea that the turnaround had finally arrived. It had not.

Things ARE different this time, with BBRY sidestepping a EU or N. A. launch in favor of China. And why not? Asians, more than other demographics, like the larger screens and format. Financial risk has been moderated (though not eliminated).

The deep unknown is whether it will sell. T Heins, who was in a position to guess intelligently, forecast sales in the 10s of millions for BB10s. In a recent article on sales in China, "Samsung Blinked..." by SA author Michael Blair, he offers a snapshot of how sales are fairing in China. It isn't too pretty for those firms from outside. Samsung is tied for 4th place and Apple is a very distant 11th, being outsold by leader Xiaomi 6:1.

    http://seekingalpha.co...

If the new devices do well, there is no doubt that there will be joy in Mudville ("Casey at the Bat," 1888) for it will be a sign of design acceptance and actual demand, which were not present for BB10.

But if the numbers stall, it is time to re-vision what the corporate strategy is. Fortunately, the strongest plank may yet be in security, but that plank needs to be more visible soon.

AS far as the stock price I doubt it has anything to do with pictures of the new passport, although it could have some influence since this is close to the official release version. I noticed that they also said that the passport is still subject to changes before release. Who knows what other surprises lay in store for the beleaguered shorts lmao!

Well, I heard that to add to the retro look with the pronounced keyboard, Chen is also making a bet-the-farm gamble and going with a screen that has good resolution but is only in black and white. The lack of a color screen has excellent ramifications for battery life, some +15%.

Chen hired linguists to pore over posting data and discovered the BBRY enthusiasts were extremely polar - in other words, black and white with little middle ground. BBRY products were "awesome, exceptional, ground-breaking, miles ahead, the best, unquestionably the best, god-like... etc." Other devices, other companies, people not sharing those views were "laggards, dated, antique, pitiful, pathetic, head-in-patootie... etc." There just wasn't the "kind of, sort of, slight improvements, useful upgrade" language that often seeks compromise and rational observation.

Hence, black and white it is.

The language experts did stumble over one description of the Z30 reminding the poster of "Suzy Entwhistle in tenth grade." They couldn't decide if that was good or bad but decided if Suzy was that memorable, it was, once again, a black and white comment.

The BBRY share rallied not because of the leaked picture, the picture was on the web for more than two weeks. It rallied because it refused to go down, and people were just tired of waiting, myself included, and of course the shorts got scare and ran for cover. Buy on dip is still the way to invest in this stock.
