Iraq to elect new leadership

The Iraqi parliament will today convene with the objective of establishing a new leader, and the hope of ending sectarian division causing violence and instability in the country. The first step will be to vote in a parliament speaker, who will then outline a proposed plan to select a prime minister within 45 days.

Current Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will be eligible to run for a third term, although his handling of the current uprising in the country has cast many shadows on his leadership capabilities.

Yesterday, President Obama ordered another 200 troops to Iraq to protect American property and citizens, bringing the total U.S. troop count to 700. "This force will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that it is no longer needed," says Obama.
