Not only have hard drive prices risen thanks to shortages, DRAM prices are finally on the upswing as well. That's leading to a rising bill of materials (BOM) for PC makers, says Barclays' Ben Reitzes, which in turn is hurting their margins. Reitzes considers Apple (AAPL) to be relatively immune, since the MacBook Air eschews hard drives for NAND flash memory. Moreover, NAND prices are falling, and that could boost margins for the Air and iOS devices.
