The search goes on for a new CEO at J.C. Penney

J.C. Penney (JCP -1.4%) is back to the drawing board in its hunt for a new CEO after HSN's (HSNI +0.2%) Mindy Grossman opts to stay put, according to the WSJ.

The retailer has been searching for over a year to find the right replacement for interim CEO Mike Ullman.

The JCP board can't afford to pick another bad apple.
JCP just needs a true retail dog to get this company back on solid ground. Maybe the board should consider the CFO, Record for the position. He definitely has the resume of experience with big box retailers in finance and operations. Ullman can spend another 6-months mentoring Record and then slide him into the position. Record would keep the company on a straight and narrow path and provide JCP the foundation they need to focus on customers and sales. He already has a strong team in Merchandising and Operations. Just a thought.

Penney must continue to do what its doing and tweak its store operations a bit in order to attract new customers.

Any new CEO must not attempt to revolutionize JCP, rather take it on an evolution to "newness and better" over time.

they are looking for a new CEO during this process??? They should hire someone internal who has been shadowing Mr. Ullman and will keep his store philosophy alive after he is gone. Also, see no issue why they can't keep Mr. Ullman on for one year after his CEO exit as a consultant/advisor to the board.

    Right on, jimmy.

Probably no way Ullman will walk away......too much sweat/brain equity invested since coming back to, hopefully, save this grand old lady. My guess is that he'll be in the wings for some time to come.
