North Dakota crude no more dangerous than similar fuels, report finds

An industry-funded study concludes that crude oil from the Bakken region is similar to other North American light, sweet crudes and does not pose a greater risk to transport by rail than other crudes and transportation fuels.

But the study also outlines several best practices intended to boost safety, including classifying the crude higher on the hazardous material shipping scale.

The group hopes the report allays fears that Bakken oil may be more prone to ignition after a series of accidents involving rail shipments of the oil.

Bakken producers include CLR, EOG, KOG, WLL, HES, XOM, OAS, NOG, EOX, MRO.

    And this is a great time to buy the dip. (NYSE:CLR), (NYSE:WLL), and (NYSE:OAS) seem best. But (NYSE:MRO) seems undervalued.

    The industry taking this position is pointless but it should not affect price either way. Anti-*frackers don't buy stock. Canada has gone ahead with plans to significantly improve rail safety by tanker car safety measures including stiffer enforcement of content certification, replacement of oldest least safe tankers, speed limits generally and specifically depending on track condition and location. The US will have new regulations to replace the old, probably this fall, that were developed with the cooperation and input of the most important rail group, i.e. The American Railroad Association. Stiff fines were given to a few producers who failed to properly certify contents. A lot of new orders for tankers will result - some were due to be replaced. Most of the effect will be on railroads which are carrying unprecedented traffic, not just oil. BNSR and Cp RR's are both adding locomotives, new track, other infrastructure improvements in North Dakota and areas where Oil Trains slow commuter traffic.
