Under Armour aims for prized Nike endorser Kevin Durant

Various media reports tip off that NBA All-Star Kevin Durant is close to signing a shoe endorsement deal with Under Armour (UA +0.3%) in excess of $30M per year.

Durant's current contract with Nike (NKE -0.5%) ends later this week.

Lebron James is the only other player in the NBA in the $30M/yr neighborhood.

What to watch: If Under Armour nabs Durant away from Nike it would be the highest-profile signing of the company's history and could increase the odds that Durant plays for the Washington Wizards - not from Under Armour's HQ in Baltimore. As for the cost, the company has seen its top-line growth outpace marketing spending recently which gives it some room for brand-building.

Seems like a hell of a lot of money for an endorsement. I'm definitely in the wrong business! Hope it pays off

UA has had a plan and stuck to it for years.
They grabbed Notre Dame's uniform/shoe deal from adidas back in the spring.
They have uniform deal in Premiership League football (soccer).
Durant signing will boost basketball shoe sales.
Interested to see how this plays out.

    Long $UA.

I don't get it. Because Durant possibly signs with UA that increases his chances of playing for the Wizards? As if Lebron's contract with Nike made it more likely for him to play for Portland....not really.

It is a big speculation. But people will want to put anything together even if it is oil and water. They're talking about Durant being closer to signing with the Wizards because UA's HQ is right down the road. Just like he's supposed to be closer to signing with the Wizards because his high school bball coach is now on their payroll. He's also from D.C.

UA is making a huge investment, but KD will be a great ambassador

One of the top players in the NBA...only LeBron is better, IMO...

Wise investment, if it comes to fruition...
