NYT: Alibaba eying mid-September IPO

With its Q2 results disclosed, Alibaba (Pending:BABA) is expected to provide an IPO price range "as soon as Tuesday," the NYT reports.

After setting a price range, Alibaba will reportedly kick off a 2-week roadshow (covering both Asia and the U.S.) ahead of an IPO the company hopes will take place during the week of Sep. 15.

Sources caution the Chinese e-commerce giant's plans could still change. The NYT previously reported Alibaba was planning an IPO "sometime after Labor Day." At one point, the company was rumored to be eying an early-August IPO.

Yahoo (YHOO +0.7%) continues to trade modestly higher.

Mobile is the future! BABA's Q2 results showed "Mobile accounted for 32.8% of GMV (up from Q1's 27.4%), and mobile revenue more than doubled Q/Q to $400M". Very impressive!

i have looked at this over and over and from a couple of different directions and YHOO looks like a no brainer. i will grant you that everything hinges on BABA. i look at the valuation on AMZN and the revenues for BABA and AMZN and the future of both and i keep coming up with a valuation for YHOO of mid 40's to mid 50's. i'm long YHOO stock and options

If the IPO price per share is set at $50-$60 and it goes off at $75 us little guys will be lucky to jump in at $100 as it starts trading. I have been long YHOO for awhile.

Yahoo is definitely a great opportunity, with potential to move into the $50s without a buyout.

But I believe Yahoo will reach a market cap of $60 billion, with a reduced share count of 900 million.

Has anyone gone long SFTBY since their ownership in BABA is greater than yahoo?

Sprint is currently trading bearishly, which is impacting SFTBY. Also, the Nikkei is failing to make new highs unlike the S&P. With Softbank you have this issue. Playing Yahoo for the Baba IPO is likely a less risky bet.

I am long SFTBY to play the BABA IPO. Not working in my favor recently, but they own 34% of BABA. At a $200B market cap, their share would be worth $68B. Currently SFTBY market cap is $83B at a 24 PE.

YHOO is also obligated to sell a big chunk at the IPO. I Don't believe SFTBY is planning to do so.

I believe BABA will be the largest company in the world some day.

This comment serves no purpose other than to add to the rampant speculation. It seems that everyone has "reliable" information. The IPO happens when it happens.
