China supplanted the U.S. in 2008 as the world's #2 auto supplier, and will surpass Japan to reach #1 in 2009, iSuppli says. "China, which produces most of its cars for domestic sale, has benefitted from its booming economy and the soaring disposable incomes of its consumers." (ETF: PGJ, FXI)

  • There's an impression that automobiles are an expression of wealth. Maybe they are in a sense, but they are also a destroyer of wealth. An effective and efficient transportation system is a creator of wealth. China, unfortunately, seems to be taking the American approach to transporation.

     

    I don't see this as good news for China. It's bad news. It suggests that, just like the US, they are developing a highly inefficient transportation system that requires consumers to purchase highly expensive equipment to make a living.
