Fujifilm flu drug could get Ebola indication by year end

  • Fujifilm Holdings (OTCPK:FUJIF) (OTCPK:FUJIY) Chairman and CEO Shigetaka Komori says his firm's flu drug, Avigan (favipiravir), may be approved for the treatment of Ebola infection as early as the end of 2014. The RNA polymerase inhibitor has been used in France, Germany, Spain and Norway to treat Ebola patients. So far, four have recovered after being treated with the drug.
  • France and Guinea intend to start clinical trials to treat Ebola this month. If Avigan (200 mg tablets) is effective, regulatory approval could happen quickly.
  • The company says is has enough Avigan inventory to treat 20,000 people and enough ingredients to produce a volume of tablets that could treat 300,000 people.
