Just weeks after Yahoo filed suit against the company, Facebook (FB) has reportedly acquired 750 patents from IBM. The patents, some of which are said to cover software and networking technologies, could more than double the size of Facebook's portfolio. Google (GOOG), another Internet giant with its share of legal troubles, purchased over 2K patents from IBM last year.

  • It's a shame that this is what things have come to. Swapping around pieces of paper for ideas, with companies fighting on those grounds, instead of actually just being able to implement the ideas and compete on that basis without having an army of lawyers on call.

  • Are you saying we should be like China, with no respect for intellectual propertry?

  • Absolutely.

If you have a good idea on your product and I have a good idea on my product, why should you *not* be able to use my idea and vice versa? We'll both still have to pay for the implementation of the products.

We both end up with better products at the end of the day, so our customers are better off, and we can compete on other things anyway, like price and customer service, and put our money there instead of into lawyers.
