Though signs are emerging of strengthening PC demand (I, II), margins are under pressure due to rising component costs. Barclays' Ben Reitzes, who warned of margin pressure earlier this month, estimates the bill of materials for the average laptop is up 1% Y/Y in Q1 thanks to rising hard drive and DRAM prices - not a small deal for a low-margin industry (Apple excluded). Moreover, LCD panel prices could move higher ahead of Windows 8's launch.
