FOMC minutes: June rate hike not a slam dunk yet

  • At least as recently as the time of the Jan. 27-28 FOMC meeting, more on the committee wanted to hold onto ZIRP for a longer time than wanted to hike as soon as June, according to the minutes.
  • "Many" on the committee said a premature rate hike would harm the recovery, while just "several" thought a postponed move risks higher inflation.
  • The minutes also show many dislike the idea of dropping the word "patient" from the statement and wonder if some other form of guidance could be used to keep markets from overreacting - this could explain the line of Fed officials since the meeting publicly suggesting a June rate hike is in the cards.
