Yahoo (YHOO -0.2%) confirms a report that it's to lay off 2,000 employees. "Today's actions are an important next step toward a bold, new Yahoo - smaller, nimbler, more profitable and better equipped to innovate as fast as our customers and our industry require," CEO Scott Thompson says. (PR)

    The usual crock pronouncement, like, leaving a dream job under duress to "spend more time with my family."

     

    Cutting R&D may keep the wolves from the door for a few quarters or years just like burning the furniture in the fireplace keeps you warm for awhile. Keeps those executive bonuses flowing too.
