Apple (AAPL) has a 7.85-inch iPad prototype in its labs, says die-hard Apple fan and blogger John Gruber in a recent podcast. The device is said to feature the same resolution as the iPad 1 and 2, rather than a retina display similar to the one in the new iPad. Plenty of rumors (I, II) have already surfaced about a 7.85-inch iPad being introduced to challenge the Kindle Fire's (AMZN) low-end leadership.

  • I might by it, my wife has the new iPad(3) and I think it is a bit too heavy, get a little warm and doesn't seem to charge on my computer or in the car.

  • It's game over for the Kindle Fire if Apple does release a smaller iPad with an entry price point of around $299.

  • The Fire and iPad are both great. Fire is not going anywhere. . . .it's in it's niche. And really, there's great economic potential for a smaller iPad and Fire. There's plenty of new business for both.

  • The Fire, as is everything else from Amazon is subpar. It is a horrible piece of equipment. The Nook Color is far superior. Just about every other tablet is superior to the fire.

Amazon itself has become a conglomeration of third party middlemen offering high prices. "thefind.com", "new egg.com" "one call.com" "buy.com" all over superior pricing to Amazon.

Within the tablet space, Apple currently Has no competition.
The only threat could be Windows 8. Windows 8 is already a vastly superior OS than IOS5.

Apples software is almost childlike compared to Windows. However, in order for 8 to take off, hardware vendors will have to design a tablet with superior battery life mated with a beautiful design. Something very incredible aesthetically.

If this can be achieved, Microsoft and Apple will be the dominat Os which will ultimately bury Android
