While shares of AOL and other patent-holding tech names (I, II) soar to such great heights, Microsoft (MSFT) trades roughly in-line with S&P futures after snapping up a billion dollars plus in new patents - down 1.1% premarket. The company's General Counsel says AOL's portfolio has been on the radar of Microsoft for years.

    I'm pretty excited about this news. Microsoft (disclaimer: my employer) wouldn't be making this purchase unless we thought it wouldn't help us in some significant way both financially and competitively. It's understandable that the early buzz is exciting and beneficial to AOL and their shareholders ("How will they spread the wealth?"), but I'm more interested in the long-term implications.
