UBS says more U.S. coal production cuts are coming and that thermal demand is waning due to weather and natural gas fuel switching. The firm expects a material impact to thermal producer estimates and sizable cuts at Arch Coal (ACI +0.5%) and for Alpha Natural (ANR +1.2%), Patriot Coal (PCX +0.5%) and James River Coal (JRCC -4.3%) to adjust production also.

This is last months old news. Buy these coal stocks at a discount while you can, as when they turn it will be sudden and unexpected. Record China/India imports, hot summer, sector rotation, decreased production while stockpiles dwindle, massive short interest, M&A activity as market cap falls. I see more positives at these levels.

Coal stocks were rallying this morning until this little tidbit hit the news.

Unless Obama is voted out...coal will continue to drop in price. Natural gas is a cheaper and easier replacement.

UBS and all the other "investment banks" should be required to fully disclose if they are short or long ANY stock they report upon, at the time of reporting. Now if UBS has no position, that's fine- then say it. But I suspect someone in that organization is short, and that should be divulged.

Are you saying that UBS is taking a play from the Goldman Sachs playbook? It happens all the time and it should be prosecuted.
What's funny, another broker rated Alpha Natural a buy this morning.
