- Vuzix (NASDAQ:VUZI) has bought a patent covering gesture controls for 3D virtual objects (USPTO filing), including within augmented reality apps. It also bought a patent covering ambient light management in wearable displays (USPTO filing). Vuzix hasn't disclosed purchase terms, other than to say it paid with cash.
- The smart glass/video eyewear maker owns 50+ patents and patent applications altogether. If the company plans to use its newly-acquired IP to sue other wearble display makers - Microsoft's HoloLens is expected later this year, as is a commercial version of Google Glass - it's not showing its hand for now. "Vuzix acquired these additional patents to secure a stronger IP position for its current and soon to be released products including, but not limited to, smart glasses based on our proprietary waveguide technology."
