"Surely they would never allow advertisements to be placed in books which you have purchased legitimately at full price, so let’s put that out of our heads."

I would like to advise the author that "Surely, they would never...." is something you do not actually write, or ever speak where anyone might be recording your words, because it will "surely" happen and will "surely" be dredged up and used against you sometime in the future. Probably the near future.

I still remember, from some distant years ago, my aunt's words..."Surely, they would never try to make us all get out of our cars and pump our own gasoline. They could never get away with that at full price."

I think we know how that turned out.

For those of you who are younger, they did it by creating a service charge of up to 50 cents a gallon (Quite a lot in those days) if you had the attendant pump the gas. There was no discount. Gone, too was the free windshield cleaning and oil gauge and tire pressure check. My aunt's words created what is commonly known as a " teachable moment" for me.
