Couldn't they use trains and Hub locations for distribution? Instead wear out highways faster, put small trains (three trailer, heavier weight) on highways next to fuel efficient subcompacts all to save a few cents per item on shipping costs. Wasn't there a CSX commercial about how far a train can go on a gallon of diesel compared to a truck....Sounds like savings to me.
