The Sierra Club says it will block Dominion Resources' (D +0.6%) plan to export 1B cubic feet per day of Marcellus Shale liquefied natural gas through the company's Cove Point, Md. terminal. A previous legal settlement gives Sierra Club the ability to reject any significant changes to the purpose or footprint of the existing terminal. (earnings)

As a former member of the Sierra club (more than 10 years ago, forgive me), I am ashamed of this club.

Sierra Club Obstructionist at ay cost. You are forgiven, it sounds so good. With all the real issues they could influence, they have to pick on something that is good for our country.

    @#$% Dominion. Talk about obstructionist!

For years, Dominion Virginia Power executives have been raking in millions while using their dirty energy money to buy political power. They’ve been making backroom deals to rig the rules for fossil fuels and for themselves.

They generate ZERO electricity for rate payers from wind or solar power but they’ve bamboozled Virginia-mandated electricity rates to include a whopping $76 million renewable energy reward for themselves.

We are outraged and Dominion needs to know it. If this is what business as usual looks like, then business as usual isn’t acceptable and has to stop before the planet cooks. It’s time for Virginians to stand up to Dominion’s exploitation and fight for a massive shift to wind and solar power.

sbuger You seem to have enough wind. Maybe you should use it to generate electricity. I hope for your sake that it would help control those out of control emotions of yours. Changing emotions into useful energy, wow what a concept!!!!!!!!!

The comment above by sburger is what I have come to expect from those in or associated with the Sierra Club. Every time I see anything from the Sierra Club it is filled with hate, bluster and little or no understanding of the real world.

    Real world?

Perhaps you remember the Dominion Power print ads that ran last year. Big, glossy spreads showing seagrass bending in the breeze, with a picture of a wind turbine and the words, “Natural. Abundant. Renewable. Wind. That’s why we’re harnessing it to help power Virginia’s energy future.”

Only, it turns out, it isn’t. It never was. Forced to reveal the energy sources the company uses to meet Virginia’s voluntary renewable portfolio standards, Dominion admitted that its customers in Virginia are getting precisely zero wind power.

As a Virginia resident and Dominion customer I would like to thank those at Dominion for not wasting my money (as a customer, shareholder and taxpayer) on wind power and thereby affording us the growing benefits of cheap natural gas generated electricity. I hope they've made similar decisions regarding solar.

As to the Sierra Club's actions on Cove Point, given the caveat they seem to have won in a previous settlement, it would be remiss of them not to use its existence to leverage something from their position. One can only hope that both they and Dominion find common ground quickly.

RK, I hope you can influence some other members of this pitifully recalcitrant bunch of mental dwarfs. The Sierra club seems bent on proving that environmentalism is a disease not a real world concept. Everyone has doubts about a lot of the things happening in energy right now but natural gas use instead of coal is not one of them, at least to real world thinkers. Hope that one day it comes home to them, in a most unpleasant way.
