Is Amazon (AMZN) crazy like a fox? A string of deals by the company to dutifully collect sales tax may end up putting it in a better position. Supporters of a federal sales tax framework face an uphill battle trying to catch support after key states already see dollars roll in and with an election making any tax vote trickier. Meanwhile, Amazon can cut strategic state tax deals on its own terms.

Without a federal sales tax framework, all these special deals with individual states regardless of how much it might have been on Amazon's terms (I think they were more a gun to Amazon's head kind of deals) actually makes it an un-level playing field for Amazon vis-a-vis other remote online retailers who can continue to sell without collecting sales taxes.
