CNNMoney's David Goldman talked with 10 Verizon (VZ, VOD) sales reps, and found all of them recommending he buy a 4G LTE Android model instead of an iPhone. Others report similar experiences. Verizon probably isn't motivated by hostility towards Apple (AAPL), but by an interest in offloading its surging mobile data traffic onto its high-capacity LTE network. It recently mentioned all of its future smartphone releases will support LTE.

  • The fact is the large screen advanced Galaxy is a better product than the iphone.

AAPL better get the 5th edition out quickly......everyday people like me will make the move.

    The new Galaxy is incredible.

Don't believe me go try one.

    Good trading.

  • Everyone has their own opinion. I tried the new Samsung Galaxy and the iPhone is leaps and bounds ahead. The Android OS is absolutley awful and unreliable. Emails are sketchy and it crashes quite a bit with the error message saying : "ForceClose". The Samsung feels like a large Chevrolet in ones had- a clunkly piece of plastic.
I switched to the iPhone 4S. What a beautiful piece of technology. Fast, reliable and smooth. The OS is unbelievably stable. The clarity of the screen is far superior to the Galaxy. The phone is the perfect size for portability and when I need a larger screen well, that is what the iPad is for. i Message is great as is face time and saves quite a bit on text costs. The 4s works seemlessly with all my other equipment.
I would never go back to an Android again and I look forward to the next generation of the iPhone. Survey most people walking around with an iPhone and they would not switch and they enjoy how it interacts with their iPad. I enjoy using face time when I away and can "call" home from my iPhone to the iPads in the house. I am sticking with Apple and tens of millions of people seem to agree.

  • People do not want bigger phones....big phones do not fit into an evening bag or a pant or jacket pocket...Apple is elegance, grace, and style....We have I Pads and MacBooks for times when we need a larger screen....a phone should be the size of a phone....Apple KNOWS WHAT'S UP!!!

  • I have a Samsung Galaxy, (last generation). I love the size of the screen, features and all of that. BUT - if US Cellular would ever start offering the iPhone, I would defect from my Android in a heart beat. Can't do ATT or Verizon. Too many dead zones in my area. The headaches with firmware and slow internet, GPS and some of the other glitches are not worth it. I understand your point and I will probably be buckling and getting the new Galaxy but, it'll be a cold day in Hell before I'd ever bet against Apple versus Android.

  • Last time I stopped by a VZ store to make changes to my plan, I asked the customer service rep what she had. She revealed that her work phone was a Samsung (issued to all employees), but her personal was an iPhone. I know "anecdote" does not equal "data," but from my personal experience the story above checks out.

  • No doubt but that the salesperson gets a better commission/bonus from the Android sale. Usually, in cases like this, it's not really hard to figure out the motivation.

  • Agree all sales folks on commission try to sell what makes them the most money period. Look at the sales plan for the answer.

VZ wants to put data on to the 4G network, and off load the overcrowded 3G network.

Apple needs to get with the program and launch their 4G product if only for that reason alone.

I am a huge AAPL overweighted to the point of

    "Danger Will Robinson"

But they need to do this soon to counter any negative pub; that they're not the lead tech dog.

    Because . . .

"If you're not the lead dog, the view never changes"

Just ask Nokia and Motorola, and now RIMM

  • If they want to get people from 3G onto 4G, then they better work on their network. I have 4G capability, but turn it off and use 3G because the 4G is too spotty and unreliable in comparison. I'd rather have my page load a little slower than not at all

  • I went into a verizon store to buy an iphone and every salesmen in the store tried to talk me into a 4g LTE android phone. It was a conserted coordinated effort.Obiviously they make more money off the android phone. But this policy was obiviously a corporate one. So you could ask every sales men at verizon they will all tell you to buy an android phone. Conclusion verizon and every other carrier sells more iphones then anything else. the product is that good.

Oh I bought an iphone my 4th.

  • How about all those law suits against Samsung on Patent infringements! Do you know how many patents in Galaxy belong to other companies, like AAPL and MMI and EK and Xerox and Rimm?

  • Verizon and Apple is a marriage of convenience. Neither company can stand the other. I've been in several Verizon stores and they recommend anything but the iPhone.

  • They have to offer it even if they dislike it, or risk a mass exodus of those who want it more than staying with their carrier.

  • You know even you are in a marriage of convenience, probably "romantic" at the very beginning and then everything fell apart and now " it is for the children" stage. That is the start of Ann Ryan, save your own even though "no man is an island" and I am O.K. you are O.K. and you know politics make strange bedfellows. You just don't know why VZ did not recommend you any iphone, probably it is the start of an ill fated attempt by VZ to bring down the subsidy! But, marketing policy of Apple does not depend on how offended is VZ by the required subsidy!

  • Android is commodity software running on commodity hardware. If it were sold at the grocery store, it would be in a white box with black lettering, "S O F T W A R E."

...and now it's pushed by commodity salespeople.

  • In addition to my previous comment.....
Prior to buying the iPhone 4S, I took my Samsung Galaxy to the Apple store and compared the two phones side by side. Regardless of its designation of 3G or 4G, the iphone was much faster than the Samsung, the text and picture on the screen was clearer and the smoothness of operation was far superior. I have no allegiance to Apple or any other company, I just want the better product.. I left with the iPhone 4S and my kids use the Galaxy to play games while their Nook Color and their iPads are charging. Even six year olds get frustrated with the operation of the android OS and they continually say is the nook charged yet, can I use the iPad!

The retail reps for verizon wireless are paid on features, not devices. A 3G iPhone pays them the same as a 3G Android. Where the push from up top is to get people onto LTE as 3G & 2G (Rev A EVDO and 1xRTT) are crowded and old. If anyone is to blame for this then it would be Apple for being so behind on technology.

Long AAPL and VZ. I have 2nd hand knowledge of VZW commission structure but have seen first hand their payout metrics.

  • I went looking for a set of golf clubs many years ago and met a salesman who could really play because I saw how he hit balls at the practice net in the store, so I took his advice on clubs he recommended. He talked me into buying a set of Jack Nicklaus golf clubs instead of the bigger name brands like Callaway or Taylormade. Later found out why, Nicklaus paid him double the commission of the the other manufacturers. Moral of the story, when sales people push a product the reason is personal greed and do your own research.

VZ and its salespeople should sell what is the best product for the consumer/user. It is shortsighted for any company to do otherwise.

On the positive side, the APPL universe - Iphone, Ipad, Mac - is a great convenience.

  • I echo what the poster said re VZ reps pushing Androids, but owning iphones

I came across the same thing at an ATT store when I bought my first iphone (ever) 4S.

I had left my company and it's androids, and jumped on my wife's family plan (wife and kids all have ip's).

I casually remarked to the sales guy "I see all you guys carry Androids".

"We have to, they give them to us. iPhones sell themselves. My personal phone is an iphone."

A side note to my story, I initially selected the SS Galaxy, cuz Android is what I knew, and I was blinded by the 4G capability. I was torn as to what to take.

They told me I could exchange it within 30 days (for a modest $35 restocking fee). I took it back paid my dues and am so glad I got my very first iphone. The difference is enormous. This from a guy who's been using android since it first came out.
