- Nexstar Communications (NASDAQ:NXST) stations have gone dark in nine markets on Cox Communications pay-TV systems, as a pitched battle between the two over retransmission rights extended past the Friday night deadline.
- Notably, the stations include two CBS affiliates -- KLAS in Las Vegas and KOLR in Springfield, Mo. -- which means that a deal would be needed to show those subscribers Super Bowl 50, now just over a week away.
- “Nexstar has not changed its offer in two weeks and is still demanding three times more for its free over-the-air stations," Cox said in a statement. Nexstar counters that it's seeking fair value, says Cox's claim of a tripling in demanded fees is false, and that it's offering Cox the rates that it offered other partners in successful negotiations in December.
- While the two have been arguing over carriage fees, Cox came out against Nexstar's bid to acquire Media General, saying a bigger company would force companies (and thus customers) to pay higher fees for retrans consent.
