- Botched testing by subcontractor Harris (HRS -0.3%) has forced another delay in the delivery of the first of 32 new GPS III satellites until later this month and raises new questions about contractor Lockheed Martin’s (LMT +0.4%) supervision of the project, according to the U.S. Air Force’s chief of space programs.
- The Air Force says HRS spent several months last year doing follow-up testing on the wrong parts instead of samples of suspect capacitors installed on the first three satellites.
- LMT has a contract to build the first 10 of the satellites, but the program’s latest setback may affect a pending Air Force decision on whether to open the final 22 satellites to competition from Boeing (BA -1.5%) and Northrop Grumman (NOC), Bloomberg reports.
