- The negotiation process between BHP Billiton (BHP -0.8%) and striking workers at its Escondida copper mine in Chile has ended unsuccessfully, and the company will seek to restart operations, Escondida's mine president says.
- BHP also is expected to evaluate an option of the Chilean labor code that would allow miners to work under the previous contract for 18 months, if miners present the option.
- Yesterday, BHP said it would suspend work indefinitely at projects linked to Escondida, such as construction work at its Coloso desalinization plant and its Los Colorados concentrator, citing continued blockades by the union.
