Mazda (MZDAF.PK) and Fiat (FIATY.PK) join forces for the first time with plans to develop a lightweight sports car and explore strategic opportunities in Europe. The linkup between the two automakers leaves Ford (F) with one less partner as a longstanding relationship with Mazda peters out.

Ford in North America depended for years on Mazda-Japan as the development center for midsize and smaller cars (eg: Fusion = Mazda6).

With re-globalization, Ford's European branch is now responsible for global subcompact and compact (B and C class) platform car and crossover development (eg: Fiesta, Focus, Escape), while Ford North America leads on midsize to large car and crossover platforms (CD and D class Fusion, Edge, Taurus, Explorer).

Basically Mazda no longer has a common shared platform with Ford, and the relationship "withered on the vine", and Mazda now needs a new "dance partner".
