AMC Networks' (AMCX -0.1%) Mad Men ratings have been soaring, and Netflix (NFLX +3%), which last year struck a costly deal to carry old episodes, is taking credit. The 1.1M viewer increase seen for the debut episode of Season 5 relative to Season 4's average is the result of viewers watching earlier seasons on Netflix, suggests content chief Ted Sarandos. His comments come as many suspect Netflix is hurting ratings for Disney (DIS) and Viacom's (VIA) kids TV shows.

Why compare the debut of Season 5 to the Average of Season 4? The debut this year had 3.54mm viewers, a 0.62mm increase over the debut of Season 4. However, those numbers have fallen steadily and Season 5 episode 10 had only 1.92mm viewers compared to 2.12mm viewers for the 10th episode of Season 4.

Don't forget that they had Mad Men promos going through the most watched cable TV prior to Season 5. The Walking Dead brought an untold extra number of people to try out the Mad Men season Premiere.

I would more readily attribute the strong season 5 viewership to carry over from The Walking Dead than the ability to watch old episodes on Netflix.

So many factors - increased exposure through reruns, DVD sales, word of mouth, and probably even Netflix but despite their illusions of greatness, Netflix isn't the sole reason for this.
