Yahoo (YHOO) provides an original approach to search and browsing with Axis, a new product that displays results as web page images instead of mere text, and automatically fetches results for related queries. Axis could prove popular on mobile devices, where users place a premium on accessing content quickly, and with as few screen taps as possible. And Yahoo definitely needs a mobile search hit right now.

Ask.com tried a similar approach several years ago, but failed to gain traction against Google. I downloaded the desktop version of Yahoo Axis to evaluate it. First impression is that there are subtle differences with this and the previous Ask.com way of providing previews of websites. If enough people find out about this, it might gain some traction. Next step would be for Yahoo to monetize this.

It seems to be a resource hog, at least on my PC. 80% CPU consumption noted after installing the Axis extension on my Firefox, rendering the PC running like an old 386 station.

Have uninstalled it now. Not sure whether it's the same for other platforms.

It reminds me that perhaps Axis was written by the board directors rather than by the programmers.

I noticed that on my MacBook Pro on Firefox after running it for a while. Seems like they might polish it a bit. I haven't tried the mobile or tablet version, but hopefully those run smoother.
