Nissan (NSANY.PK) stands in the middle of the next war over adopting an industry standard with its CHAAdeMo electric vehicle charging station that uses different plugs and isn't compatible with a rival version from General Motors (GM +1.7%) and European automakers. While charging stations slowly start to dot the urban landscape, Nissan hopes its model will become the modern-day VHS - instead of riding the fate of discarded standard Betamax.

Nissan needs to look at history. Like IBM's decision to allow cloning and Apples decision not to. An NV Phillips (I think) decision to license others to use the VHS format and Sony's shortsightedness not to license the Beta format. I do think Beta was better!

Yes, but will either type plug get me from Omaha to Atlanta in 15 hours and 20 minutes?
